This is a diagram of an osteochondroma. Less than 1% progress to a chondrosarcoma where malignant change occurs however, complete excision of the tumour is necessary. Chondrosarcoma, although usually less malignant than osteosarcoma, are resistant to treatment with both radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Bone cysts are congenital, benign, and unilocular or multilocular defects in the bone, and are commonly seen in children. They have a lining of fibrous tissue, and commonly occur in long bones and may fracture. If large they are best treated with an injection of hydrocortisone which will lead to healing in about 80% of cases. Those that do not resolve will require curettage of the lining and cancellous bone grafting.
