 Infection of a joint with a low grade organism such as the typhoid bacillus or a salmonella may cause a low grade pyogenic arthritis. The confirmation is usually made on aspiration of the pus. There often evidence of infection elsewhere.

In the case of a typhoid arthritis, the systemic treatment of the patient is important, and chloramphenicol is still the most effective antibiotic against the typhoid bacteria.
